Mataking 大眼王

Mataking 大眼王

For someone who doesn’t swim, snorkel or dive, we sure love the islands. We just love the sun, sand and sea, especially when the sun shone onto the skin with a sheer sense of pain, felt so alive!

This time we went to the long awaited and infamous Mataking, or alternatively known as The Reef Dive Resort, located an hour by speedboat off the coast from Semporna. We were welcomed by singing and music upon our arrival, as if we have landed in Maui!

Mataking is a little different from other islands we went to, as it has a very long shallow beach, because part of the island is underwater before it dropped to the deep of the ocean. One side of the island is pretty rocky, though not suitable for swiming, it made the island landscape even more interesting. Such geographical made-up created a very interesting picture of multi-layered, multi-coloured, it is indeed a photography wonderland.

The water is crystal clear that we saw schools of fishes playfully chased each other around, star fish, crabs, corals, lots and lots of seaweed as if like a pasture underwater, fascinating! As a dive center, it is surprisingly quiet this time of the year, if you’re looking to dive with less crowd or get your diving license, this is the place and time!

Unfortunately, for the two days that we were there, half of it were either cloudy or raining. We missed the sunny sky for best photography moments as well as the sunrise, as the cloud has shadowed the morning ray. :( But waking up to cool sea-breeze is a wonderful feeling!

The island is like a floating paradise, when you’re there you’re away from all civilization – no internet connection, no phone signal, no TV. The facilities are excellent, the hospitality is warm, the food suffice though the momery of Mabul Island tasty spread still lingers in my mind even after seven years!  As we bid farewell to this island paradise, the sun finally creeped out of the cloud to send us on our way.

A Pocket Full of Sunshine 满满的阳光

A Pocket Full of Sunshine 满满的阳光

It was Raya long weekend. As busy as I am with all the craziness at work, I’m determined to spend my holiday as how a holiday should be spend – forget about work and relax.

I’ve already had an outing trip planned with some friends, we have been longing to go to Sekinchan, a small town north of Selangor near the border of Perak, famous for its vast padi fields and fresh seafood, often called the rice bowl of Selangor. Perfect getaway for city folks, people like me who lived all my life in the city and buried in endless paper pushing which we called work.

We started the journey early in hope of getting there before noon. After almost a 2 hours driving through small towns and holidays traffic jam, we finally saw lushous green padi fields on our left. We knew we are there. It was noon with the hottest sun right on top of our heads, but I was so excited that I didn’t care about the heat. I stepped right out with my camera, hat and sunny, and head straight to the padi fields. I was overwhelmed by a sense of gratitude! There’s nothing like seeing where our food came from and how fard the farmers work at putting them on the table for us.

After snapping tonnes of photos, we proceed to the other side of town for some fresh seafood lunch. It was crowded due to the holidays, we waited patiently for our food to be served. Though we were a little disappointed with the food quality, we enjoyed each other companies. Nothing like sharing a meal with people you enjoy being with.

Some walking were needed after the hefty meal, we walked down the small lane in search of fishing boats and fresh fish stocks. However, since it was the holiday, the fishermen were also having their rest days. Instead of seeing busy docks, we saw fishing boast lying still in the shallow water; empty boxes; ladies mending the nets and new boat being build. For me, the most interesting is the houses. Pretty bold to be pink and having the double happiness word as decoration, people who lived there must be real happy. :)

Last stop is the beach, to see the sun hanging over the waterline and waiting for the fishing boats to return home after a hard day’s work. When the first boat returns, it was time for us to head home. I’ve always enjoy road trip, this is definitely my idea of a relaxing getaway.

KK is a tourists haven, be it back-packers or luxury travelers, there are accommodation for everyone. But the luxury hotels are truly to be desired. If you can’t afford staying in one, then touring them is not a bad idea either.

We only managed time to visit 3 of the many luxury hotels in KK:

  • Nexus Karambrunei
This resort is located about 45 minutes from KK city center, you may think is a little too far, but trust me, when you get there, you wouldn’t want to leave! It is facing South China Sea, so the resort has long white sandy beach, with cold water and bigger wave. There are hundreds of lazy chairs put out by the hotel facing the sea, I can seriously spend the whole day enjoying the sea breeze and relax.

  • Sutera Harbour
This resort is just a stone throw away from KK city center. The selling point of this resort is it is a twin resorts neighbouring Magellan Sutera, allowing it to have more facilities than other resorts. In addition, it has a marina with beautiful yachts lining its docks, and jetty for boat rides to nearby islands. Is a perfect family resorts with lots of activities to do.

  • Shangri-la Tanjung Aru
This resort is right next to the airport. Is a majestic hotel built with local architecture flavour and folk arts line its walls. It gave it a very ethnic feel. Is the perfect place to watch the sunset, is it a very popular place for weddings. We saw Sylvia Chang (a famous Taiwanese actress, writer, producer) while we were there. :)

Maybe some day I’ll be able to afford one of these luxury hotels for a relaxing holiday.

If the mountain is not your cup of tea, I hope the sea is.

Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park is located a stone away from Kota Kinabalu, a 15 minutes very pleasant speed boat ride. Many boat operators make hourly trips to the islands from Jesselton Point Jetty. You can choose to visit as little as one island or as many as 5 islands.

We chose a 2 islands (Mamutik Island, Manukan Island) tour for the day. we figured that we don’t need to tire ourselves hopping from island to island, instead just enjoy the island, the beach, the sea and the sunshine. We were totally mesmerized by its heaven-like beauty, just look at these photos, wouldn’t you agree?
